Stay Safe While Biking/Hiking with a Trial Map

For outdoor enthusiasts, a day spent in the mountains or forest hiking, or even biking, is pure heaven.  However, we have heard too many times of hikers, who go missing.  Some of this is caused by accidental injury, because they were unfamiliar with the route and zigged when they should have zagged.  Others find themselves lost and in unfamiliar territory, making it impossible for them to find a way back to civilization.  There are ways to avoid ever finding yourself in this situation, the easiest being to simply take a printed map of the hiking trail with you.

Dangers of the Outdoors

Most people will admit that they love the outdoors.  Honestly, considering the beauty of our forests and the majesty of our mountains, it is easy to see why we are drawn to the outdoors.  However, if you are hiking or biking, there are dangers all around.  Wild animals, rugged terrain, a baking sun, even lack of a fresh water source can turn your day into a nightmare.  It is always important that anyone planning on taking on outdoor activities be aware of the various dangers and do what they can to protect themselves.

Why Take a Map?

Hikers and mountain bikers truly love to find that new trail, that they have never seen before and experience all it has to offer.  This is great way to see more of the area, likely adding some excitement to your day.  The problem with this is that it is unfamiliar territory, since you don’t know it, you don’t know what to expect.  Some of these trails will even be washed out halfway down, if the area is known for rain and the trail is unused.  Taking a map with you will let you know the exact location of the trail and, more importantly, how to get back to the beginning.  Printed maps can be beneficial, when you are in areas where the option of using a GPS system of some sort is reception impossible.

The only thing that is more important than taking a map with you to stay safe is making sure to take a partner with you.  You never want to undertake these activities on your own, as it can leave you completely stranded, if something were to happen.  Considering the dangers that these activities come with, protect yourself the best you can and always be prepared by carrying a map.

Last Minute Equipment for a Cycling Adventure

You’ve bought your bike and safety gear.  You’ve studied the trails various times online and on maps and have your route planned out.  You’ve planned this for a week and now it is finally time.  Gearing up for a nice day of cycling is easy to do ,but before braving that first trail, you do want to make sure to take inventory one final time to make sure you have everything you need.

What Type of Terrain?

Your terrain will have much to do with what supplies you will need.  If you are riding the desert, for instance, you will want to make sure to have enough water to last you at least the day.  If you are riding the forest, you may also want to pack bug spray or some sort of anti-itch lotion, in case you ride through a patch of poison oak.  Make sure that you think about your terrain deeply, before making your final equipment check.

Prepare for the Worst

Just like that decision to get one of those bad credit loans, instant decision making is required, when taking on any trail.  Things come up and if you are not prepared to adapt, it could mean a nasty spill with broken bones or, if you take the wrong turn, even death.  It is important to remember this and plan accordingly.  While you may not want to add much extra weight to your bike, perhaps a few extra water bottle holders would be beneficial, without being too cumbersome.  A fanny pack may be useful in carrying food to boost your energy or sustain you for a day, should you need it to.

Grabbing that last minute equipment for your trip won’t be tough to do.  Even if you aren’t able to run to a sporting goods stores, many retailers like Target and Walmart, for example, carry an extensive stock of cycling equipment, for those last minute stops.  The most important thing to remember is that your safety comes first and if you are prepared for the worst, you will be worlds ahead of those cyclist that find themselves unprepared.

Cycle With Your Friends

The Best Adventure Travel Ideas for Cyclists

Just because you book a vacation that involves a cruise doesn’t mean you won’t be able to take advantage of cycling opportunities. In fact some of the most interesting biking opportunities available can be realized by booking your travel with Lindblad Expeditions. All ships and boats have to end up in port at some time or another; and these are your golden opportunities to enjoy hiking, scuba diving and even biking through villages and tropical settings.

Everybody On The Bus

Once your ship docks you will most likely be shepherded to a number of chosen locations. Snorkelers and scuba divers will be bused to a beach, bikers and sightseers to a different location in town. Cycling will probably take place in groups and it is well advised that you stay with your group, particularly if you’re not familiar with your surroundings. Nobody wants to get lost in the middle of nowhere and miss the boat to the next destination. Wait a second… Let me rethink that. Lost in the middle of a tropical paradise—could be worse. Could be Detroit.

This Isn’t Your Everyday Mountain Biking

Remember as you go biking through the towns and tropical scenery that you’re not biking in and amongst the cool Colorado Rockies. You are in the tropics now. It’s humid; it’s hot; and it may well be buggy in certain areas. Staying hydrated is of the utmost importance as is dressing appropriately. Sunscreen is an absolute must as well as a sun cap that will breathe, thereby allowing airflow to your heated brain, while still keeping the sun off. Appropriate clothing goes all the way down to your sneakers. If your feet are uncomfortable chances are the rest of you is miserable as well.

The cruise that I took years ago was probably the best vacation of my entire existence. Sometimes I think it’s a tossup between the cruise and the week I spent on a tropical island at a luxury resort. Once again, there was ample opportunity for tours and excursions daily. Or I could simply sit at the pool bar (in the pool) and sip banana daiquiris until it was time to gamble in the on-site casino.

Treating Common Cycling Injuries

Cycling can be a very fun sport if you are into competing in all of the cycling contests and races in your area. However, from time to time you can get injuries such as pulling a muscle or even a tendon. The good news is that these injuries are all very common and you can also get them treated fairly quickly. Something that is always requested is pain medication or some type of anti-inflammatory medication to help your muscle and tendon heal faster so that you are able to compete.

Getting A Quick Fix

Once you have injured yourself it is very important that you get online and start looking for a Canadian pharmacy to help you save money on your prescription that you are going to need. If it anytime you are unsure of what medication you will need then you can always go to Wikipedia for immediate answers on medication that will help inflammation and pain. The most important thing you need to do is treat the entry immediately. If it anytime you feel as though you need to see your physician it is highly recommended you do that because you never want to go untreated if you have a serious injury.

Recovery Time

Getting better can take a few weeks. Most of this depends on how serious your injury truly is. It is important that you understand that you need to lay off all of the physical activity and let your body heal. It might seem frustrating but it is in your best interest to follow your doctor’s advice if you had to see a physician for your injury. If you do not need to see a physician and you treated the entry yourself then do the right thing and take a few weeks off.

As you start to come back from your injury make sure you start slow so that you do not re-injure yourself. In a few days you will be able to notice a huge difference and you will start feeling much better about any cycling that you are participating in.
